The joke might be on the BAFTA Film Awards this year, whose nominees in the major categories were overwhelmingly white and male. Leading the pack is Joker, which scored 11 nominations, closely followed by The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with 10 each, and 1917 trailing closely behind with nine. The BAFTA 2020 nominations were announced just this morning but already the British Academy is facing backlash for the lack of diversity in the main acting categories as well as the absence of female filmmakers on the director’s shortlist.

Joker received the most nominations of any film at the BAFTA Film Awards, which will take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on February 2, 2020. It is followed by The Irishman, with director Martin Scorsese scoring his 14th BAFTA nomination, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Quentin Tarantino earning his 11th BAFTA nod. The one Brit of the group, Sam Mendes, came up closely behind with his war drama 1917. But despite big British wins at the Golden Globes this Sunday, the BAFTA Awards are looking more like a predictor for the 2020 Academy Awards. Which may not bode well for the Oscars’ ongoing diversity problem.

But BAFTA has its own diversity headache to deal with, after this year’s main acting categories failed to nominate a single person of color, and the best director’s category didn’t include one female filmmaker, despite the wealth of options like Greta Gerwig for Little Women, Lulu Wang for The Farewell, and Marielle Heller for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Similarly, frontrunners of color in U.S. awards didn’t even get a nod in the acting categories, like Jennifer Lopez as best supporting actress for Hustlers or Awkwafina for lead actress in The Farewell. Instead, BAFTA nominated several actresses twice across the two categories, such as Margot Robbie, who got two best supporting actress nods for Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Scarlett Johansson, who is represented in both the best actress category (Marriage Story) and best supporting actress category (Jojo Rabbit).

“Infuriating lack of diversity in the acting noms,” Marc Samuelson, chair of BAFTA’s film committee, told Variety. “It’s just a frustration that the industry is not moving as fast as certainly the whole BAFTA team would like it to be.”
